One of the most special places in Greece, suitable for both summer and winter escapes, is Pelion. Within a stone’s throw of the city of Volos, the mountain of the Centaurs is the ideal choice for every season of the year, as it is full of beautiful picturesque villages, impressive landscapes, atmospheric guesthouses and quality food suggestions to suit every taste.
It was with great pleasure accepting the invitation to visit Pelion and stay at Pelion Mansion, Arhontiko Hatziargiri, the oldest mansion of Portaria dating back to 1845. So on a sunny day of December, we travelled to Pelion to spend two days in this beautiful place. A traditional Greek coffee was the best possible welcome!
The mansion owners, Nick and Katerina, welcomed us warmly and made us really feel like we were “at home”.
They decided to change their lives, leave the United Kingdom behind them and their professional activities and settle permanently in Greece, who both love so much. They knew this would not be easy, but they decided to take a big chance and go for it. Besides, when you are determined to sacrifice a lot to make your dream come true, you will definitely make it in the end!
They came to Greece and chose to make their new start in the enchanting region of Pelion and beautiful village of Portaria, a unique place where nature and landscapes inspire and fascinate each visitor. Taking advantage of the opportunity, they decided to reopen the Pelion Mansion Arhontiko Hatziargiri, one of the most beautiful and unique traditional mansions of Portaria. With magnificent views of Makrinitsa, the lush mountainside and just 2 minutes from the main square of Portaria “Melina Merkouri”, it is the ideal retreat for discovering the beauties of Pelion.
It has 6 rooms that have been named according to the Muses of Greek mythology, each with its own character and all emitting an atmosphere of elegance and warmth. The interior decoration is treated with traditional elements and aesthetics that promise authentic moments of relaxation every season of the year.
Crossing the large wooden door of the mansion, we immediately felt its warmth and special character. Its impressive architecture carries the authentic character of Pelion and is a faithful reflection of the influences of the 18th century. Nick and Katerina kept the image of the guest house intact and dream of offering a unique hospitality experience to every visitor. And they certainly do it …
From the very first moment we entered the mansion, we felt that this experience would be very different from what we had been used to. If you choose the Pelion Mansion Arhontiko Hatziargiri for your accomodation in Pelion, you will agree that this is not a typical guesthouse. The hosts will make sure you do not miss anything and the unique atmosphere of the guesthouse will take you to another era.
The traditional wooden beams, the stone floor and the warmth of the fireplace create the best conditions for you to experience moments of relaxation and tranquility. On the ground floor of the mansion you will enjoy the fresh homemade breakfast, a hot coffee or a traditional tsipouro with the necessary accompanying meze. Do not forget to try the unique homemade thick hot chocolate! They also offer a wonderful ‘Pelion Mansion breakfast in bed’, which I must say was truly excellent.
On the middle floor you can relax in the beautiful sitting room, playing board games and on the top floor you will enjoy the daylight in the impressive living room with the wooden ceiling and the numerous windows with view to the terrace, Makrinitsa and the mountainside.
We decided to take advantage of the amazing weather and visited the magnificent Makrinitsa or “balcony of Pelion”. The well preserved Pelion architecture, the magnificent view and the small distance from Volos have made Makrinitsa one of the most popular destinations of Pelion all year round.
Makrinitsa is one of the most picturesque and traditional settlements in Pelion. The name “balcony of Pelion” came from Eleftherios Venizelos, who named it so when he visited it in 1934. The view of the Pagasitic Gulf and the city of Volos is breathtaking. The authentic architectural style, the well-kept mansions, the picturesque cobblestone streets and the lush landscape make this place unique.
After enjoying the amazing view and the sunny day, we returned to the mansion where the warmth of the fireplace awaited us. Nick and Katerina talked about their personal story, their decision to change their lives, and their dreams for the guesthouse. They give their best and they manage to offer an authentic hospitality experience to every visitor who will definitely leave completely satisfied and wanting to return. “Dream stay”, “The best hospitality in Pelion”, “Just amazing”, “Excellent stay”, “Fantastic stay at a beautiful place” … are just some of the visitors reviews on tripadvisor.
This is how we spent 2 special days in Portaria combining the unique hospitality with beautiful landscapes and relaxing moments. Whenever you decide to visit Pelion, choose for your stay the Pelion Mansion Arhontiko Hatziargiri and be prepared for a beautiful and different hospitality experience.
Nick & Katerina thank you!
